HOOP & HOE
a balancing act between identities
And what happens in between?
contemporary circus in which gender and balance are equally central – both physically and socially. Two performers balance objects on their bodies, seemingly light, fragile, powerful. An axe, traditionally associated with “masculinity”. A feather duster, symbolising ‘femininity’. These objects are not just held – they are negotiated.
What happens when these roles are shaken up? When the objects are swapped and meanings are redistributed? When stereotypical attributions are overturned and a third field opens up – one in which identity is not rigid but fluid? In addition to a change in objects, there is a change in perspective: the audience becomes witnesses to an ongoing balancing act that provides neither smooth answers nor fixed categories, but questions, breaks, and spaces in between. And that is precisely where we start to think.
