vom Fallen und Fangen

In a small circle, in the middle of a funnel-like arena, a performer moves, balancing bamboo sticks on toes, on fingers, on chin and back, and abruptly dropping them again and again. Who catches the falling sticks, however, remains an open question. In a simple and intelligent way, the performer plays with the natural reactions of the audience. Sensitively and empathetically he communicates through eye contact and movement, playing with human reflexes and reactions and ultimately manipulating focus and attention. Of Falling and Catching is an interactive circus performance by KLUB GIRKO. With a specially designed construction, a unique interplay of audience, large and small bamboo poles, of light, sound and architecture is created. Hidden behind the simple principle of balance, the audience experiences connectedness and community.

The process

The project vom Fallen und Fangen starts in 2021 with the funding #takeaction from the Fonds Darstellende Künste. During this time, several researches will take place at Maschinenhaus Essen and Tollhaus, together with the architect Thomas Bohne and our outside eye Joan Catalá. The aim is to determine the shape of an interactive stage design, to build a prototype and to test it with the audience. At the same time, in cooperation with the statics office MWB, a design for the realization of the grandstand as well as a first cost estimate will be developed.

In November 2022, we will work on the artistic conception of Vom Fallen und Fangen, and for this we will engage in movement research with a focus on participatory elements. This will be done with the support of the Fond Darstellende Künste #Prozessförderung. In a four-week residency at Theaterhaus Mitte, we research with performer and director Claudio Stellato as an outside eye to develop a dramaturgy for the piece in our prototype. In addition, interviews with the dramaturg Bauke Lievens and a workshop with the theater construction company Ventum are planned. Here, content-related, artistic, but also practical questions about the construction of the grandstand and its touring will be clarified.

In 2023, various residencies are planned. We are particularly looking forward to showing our piece as a work in progress to a larger audience in the summer of 2023 as part of a co-production with the Societaetstheater.
